There are many different models of shinguards but only a few provide adequate protection.  Stanno use hard scales for their shinguards, which divide point pressure over the complete surface and protect the lower leg from injuries.  The harder the scale the more the pressure is spread over the entire surface.  

The best shinguards have a very hard scale, a soft inner, and are anatomically designed to fit left and right legs.
